What is this medication?

CANTHARIDIN (kan theh ruh din) treats molluscum, a common viral skin infection that causes small, firm bumps on the skin. It will not treat infections caused by bacteria.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

What should I tell my care team before I take this medication?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Other skin conditions
  • An unusual or allergic reaction to cantharidin, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • Breastfeeding

How should I use this medication?

This medication is for external use only. It is given by your care team in a hospital or clinic setting. Wash the treated area with soap and water 24 hours after treatment unless your care team tells you otherwise.

Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While it may be given to children as young as 2 years for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

What if I miss a dose?

Keep appointments for follow-up doses. It is important not to miss your dose. Call your care team if you are unable to keep an appointment.

What may interact with this medication?

Interactions have not been studied. Do not use any other skin products on the same area of skin without talking to your care team.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress. Tell you care team if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.

Avoid contact of the treated areas of your skin with your mouth, nose, genital areas, and eyes for 24 hours after treatment or until washing. If you or your child swallows this medication, contact poison control or emergency services right away. If it gets in your eyes, flush them well for 15 minutes. Get medical help right away.

This medication is flammable. Avoid fire, flames, and smoking near the treated area until the medication is washed off your skin.

Talk to your care team before breastfeeding. Changes to your treatment plan may be needed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medication?

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:

  • Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):

  • Burning or pain at application site
  • Change in skin color
  • Dry skin
  • Itching
  • Skin tenderness or blistering

Where should I keep my medication?

This medication is given in a hospital or clinic. It will not be stored at home.
